Auto response
What this chapter covers
When a specific comment lands on a post, conma automatically posts a public reply and sends the commenter a DM. Distributing materials, sharing links, or announcing events can run 24/7 without a person answering each one manually. You can even use "Send to followers only" to encourage people to follow you.
7.1When to use it
| Situation | Setup |
|---|---|
| Distributing materials or coupons | "materials" comment → download link DM |
| Recruiting for an event or trial group | "join" comment → entry instructions DM |
| Driving consultations or bookings | "inquiry" comment → DM with a booking page button |
7.2Before you start
- Instagram integration must be complete.
- To use 'Choose from existing posts,' you need at least one post on Instagram. (If you don't have any yet, you can pre-set this on 'Posts I'll publish later.')
7.3Step-by-step guide
Setup takes 3 steps.
Click '+ Create new' in the top right of the Auto response menu to open the DM automation settings form with a live preview. There's no limit — create as many auto responses as you want.
That said, only one auto response can run per post. If several overlap on the same post, it can look like spam and put the account at risk, so it's limited to "1 post, 1 live" to keep your account safe.

As you fill in conditions on the settings form, the preview shows what the actual message will look like. Click the pencil icon at the top to rename this automation for easier management.

Choose which post it applies to
- Apply to posts I'll publish later: automatically applies to whatever you post from now on (one per account)
- Choose from existing posts: pick from posts you've already published (posts that already have an auto response show a 'Live' badge)

Decide which comments trigger it
- Everyone who comments, or only comments containing a specific keyword (up to 3 keywords)
- Decide whether to also post a public reply to the comment (e.g., "Thanks for your comment! We sent you a DM!"). Add multiple message variations and one is picked at random each time, so it doesn't look like spam.

Decide who gets the DM and write the message
Decide who receives the DM and write the message. Add up to 3 button links if needed (e.g., get materials, booking page).
Sends a DM to everyone whose comment matches the condition. You only need to write one message.

DMs go out only to followers. Write three separate messages for the different follow states.
- Follow verification request: asks them to follow and then click a button to verify
- Not yet verified: a follow-up asking them to follow, then click the verify button again
- Verified: the final message with material/link buttons

Then click 'Start DM automation' and you're done. From now on, any comment matching the conditions on that post triggers an automatic DM.
Message tip: keep it short, and clearly state one thing the recipient should do next (like clicking a button).
7.4How follow verification works
Here's the flow for someone who isn't already a follower when "Send to followers only" is on.
- They leave a comment matching the condition.
- conma sends a follow verification request DM: instructions to follow and then click a button.
- They follow and click the button. If the follow is confirmed, they receive the final message (with material/link buttons); if not yet confirmed, they receive a message asking them to follow and click the re-verify button.
This flow naturally turns people who want the material into followers.

7.5Managing after creation
Each automation is managed by status.
Filter with the status tabs above the list (All · Live · Ready · Draft), and turn each automation on or off anytime with its switch. 'Live' means it's currently running, 'Ready' means it's turned off, and 'Draft' means it was started but not finished. When an event ends and you want to pause it briefly, turn off the switch instead of deleting it.

Deleting stops the auto response for that post and can't be undone. If you just want to pause it, turn off the switch instead of deleting.
